Before you overwrite a drive

A short pause that protects the drive you meant to keep.

Two USB sticks can look identical in a drive list. Before Restore, Clone or Make Bootable, take a moment to identify the physical device that will be erased.

Source stays. Target goes.

The source is the drive or file you are copying from. The target is the drive you are replacing. For Clone, confirm both sides independently. For Restore and Make Bootable, confirm the selected file as well as the target drive.

Use more than a drive letter

Compare the model, capacity and serial number where one is reported. Disk numbers and letters can change after reconnecting devices. Disconnect unrelated removable drives before starting, where practical.

Keep the only copy out of the target slot

If the target contains anything you need, stop and copy it elsewhere first. A cancelled write can still leave the target incomplete. There is no undo button for overwriting a whole drive.

Missing identifiers

Some readers do not report useful identifiers. If you cannot confidently identify a target, stop. DiskSnap can block a clone between otherwise-identical drives that both lack a serial number and unique ID. Do not try to bypass that protection.
